Yet when it comes to people's actual behavior --- what they do rather than what they say -- appearance seems to be a very powerful thing, especially when strangers are forming their first impressions of each other. Are people unaware of the importance they place on looks, or are they simply unwilling to admit that they so highly value such superficial characteristics? The findings suggest that we are aware of the value we place on looks --- but as long as we think we can get away with it, we won't admit it. Any relationship that is based solely on sex tends towards physical appearances rather than emotional maturity. I would wager to guess that this actually applies more to the 'promiscuous community', if you will, rather than just the gay community. I mean, really! Committing to someone for a long term relationship requires much more in the way of emotional connecting than does someone you just happen to be sleeping around with.
